Since there is little recent information available about Refuge de l'Erco, we would like to share our experience. Last week, we stayed overnight (29.9.2024), and it was great! Do make sure you're well-prepared, as the hut is fully self-sufficient.
The mattresses are indeed not clean, and the thought of bedbugs was a bit unsettling. So, we made covers for the mattresses out of trash bags, and we didn't have any problems.
The stove worked perfectly, and there is plenty of wood around the hut. There was also a small supply inside, which we restocked before we left. The purpose of the sanitary facility was unclear to us. There’s no water connected, and the door was locked, so we couldn’t use it.
About 30 meters from the hut, there’s a stream that has enough water year-round. This is perfect for freshening up and replenishing your water supply. Don’t forget to bring water purification tablets or liquid.
There is a gas stove in the hut, but it doesn’t work. There are some pans, but they are quite dirty, so we were glad we brought our own. We left behind some matches, tea lights, a few esbit fuel tablets, hard tack, and a well-sealed ready-made meal, hoping someone else could benefit from them!
Make sure to store your food properly before going to bed. We didn’t do this and were promptly visited by a mouse during the night.
There are two routes from the hut to climb Monte Cinto: via Lac de Cinto (around 4,5 hours) or directly (around 3 hours). We chose the shorter but steeper route. It’s well-marked with yellow markers, though not everywhere is there a clear path—you'll sometimes need to scramble over rocks.
